Take a walk through your home and check out all the types of storage containers you either have in closets or display on shelves and tables. Without even thinking about it, wouldn’t you rather have see-through containers to see what you have?
Around the holidays, there are so many containers which come with Christmas gifts. The idea here is to have the contents of the gift in a container that can be used later. For instance, that plain, buttered or cheese popcorn comes in big metal tins. Cookies and candies are in tins. Those who receive gift baskets will always have a basket once its contents are put away or used.
We like to think that this special packaging is very attractive and will be used long after the gift has been used. I remember when companies used to send you pretty tins advertising their products if you sent a number of proof of purchase seals. Pretty containers also make it easier to wrap the gift. In some cases, all it takes is a big, colorful bow to stick on the package.
Containers given as part of a gift are no different. You can store items in the containers, give them away or use them as part of gift wrapping or donate them. As long as a container has an attractive pattern or has a seasonal theme, it can be utilized.
When you want to store your items, you need to think about what you are storing and select the proper storage containers which will be ideal for the job. For years, many department stores and home improvement stores have been selling big, plastic tubs with tops. Sturdy, cardboard boxes can be purchased at stores, moving companies and storage units. Although tubs come in clear plastic or colorful, opaque plastic, the ideal tub for storage would be a clear plastic or see-through plastic tub. Although you can label most containers, it is helpful to glance at a plastic tub so you can instantly identify the contents of each storage tub. Cardboard is thick, and packing boxes need to be opened or labeled if you want to keep track of contents.
Metal and plastic containers are attractive, but you have to label them or remove the lids to identify what you have. Tupperware has always been popular, but even its containers for flour, sugar, and other food items cannot be quickly identified just by looking at the size of the storage containers. Other decorative metal containers, like the ones which hold gift bottles of alcohol, can usually be recycled for storage use. Again, there are no hints to what can be found inside the containers.
Baskets and open boxes are also used as storage, and depending on the design and how the storage containers are displayed, the contents can easily be seen. File boxes and cabinets are meant to keep documents, but they are usually found in the home office. Even if these are constructed out of real wood, no one pays much attention to its contents. Once something is filed away, no one things about where it ends up. Paper and files are hidden from view, so they are usually forgotten.
Anytime you cannot immediately identify the contents of a container, you will lose time searching for the right container. You will have to remove the lid or have the need to label and identify the object for the future. Whether you have a clear container or not, you could spend some time labeling the containers. But with a quick glance of a clear container, you can easily identify if the item or items you need. What you are looking will usually be within easy reach.
If you are stuck with containers you will not use, either give them away or donate them. Start fresh with your storage supply. Starting with clear plastic containers, get them in all the sizes you will need.
When selecting containers for storage, it is much easier to have see-through containers if you are serious when it comes to keeping track of what you have. If you are a home cook, you already know how helpful it is to have see-through containers like heavy glass jars for things like spaghetti and cereal. Even glass candy and cookie jars allow anyone to check its contents at any times for amounts you have on hand as well as the freshness of the products. Do you remember a co-worker who always kept a candy supply on the top of his or her desk? Usually, the successful candy person at work never let anyone down, and a glass container always worked better than a tin with top.
Save your pretty tins for gifts and personal collections. Use see-through containers for items you constantly use or need to replenish. When you use these types of containers, you save time when it comes to finding what you need.
The idea is not to waste, but to use what you have. When you can’t see what you want or need, what’s the use? It is important what containers you select to do the job.

Well, I've used one (bought on ebay for about ten bucks) for a few things, but I don't go crazy with it. I don't want to be a neat freak or anything like that. :-) Will never happen in my case....But I have used it mostly on those little plastic drawer things: tape, wire, glues, etc.... Get a label maker. It could be useful for some things!

Arlene, if I don't know what's in it, I do label it. A label maker is very handy! I use those containers that popcorn comes in. The ones that have pets on them are great. I've used them for cat litter and food for cats and dogs. I'm very frugal and I recycle, so anytime I can reuse something, I will. Useful and interesting hub--voted up!
