Quick! Finish Those Homemade Valentines Before Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and when you want to bypass the store-bought valentines at this late date, you will need to hustle. Making valentines is not a hard thing to do if you have the supplies and are able to set aside a few hours. Get all your supplies together, and clear a place on a table or work space. In order to get these valentines completed, focus on enjoying the project and getting it done.

Remember when you received valentines when you were a child? Back then, valentines were very simple and inexpensive. There is no reason why you can’t make valentines similar to the ones you have received in the past. Handmade valentines come from the heart, and cannot be duplicated. Don’t aim for perfection. Any “flaw” in a handmade valentine will not stand out, and will most likely add to a valentine’s handmade charm.

Before purchasing your supplies, go through your own collection of art supplies at home. If you have been doing art and other hobbies all along, there is a possibility that you have most or all of the supplies you need. Homemade valentines don’t require a lot of money. The idea is to use the art supplies that you have around the house and avoid the need to do additional shopping.

Anything goes as you make your handmade valentines. Use your creativity to make handmade valentines to delight your loved ones. It is too easy for anyone to purchase greeting cards, but when you spend your time creating as well as making your own valentine cards, your work will be appreciated.

Don't be surprised if your work becomes a keepsake.

Suggestions

If you are not artistically inclined, use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to trace your patterns onto your art paper, magazines or drawings. Cut your hearts and paste them onto card stock (postcards) or cards.

Cut simple heart shapes out of the paper that you have. If you look at children’s valentines, they are simple. The design is on one side, and blank on the other.

Love sounds better in a foreign language. Calligraphy pens give valentines a classy look. You don’t have to be an artist to use calligraphy pens, but you can use a regular pen. Simply write a phrase of love in a foreign language. For instance, mi amor means “my love” in Spanish, vi sono l’amore della mia vita means “you are the love of my life” in Italian, and ewig dein is German for “forever (eternally) yours.”

Don't Forget Potato Print Cut Outs for Creative Valentines

Thank you, robotmonster. For some reason, I could not quit making valentines this year, so it will be sad for me to see Valentine's Day go. I love anything homemade. Actually, I melt when anyone gives me a handmade gift. Means a lot!

I started doing lots of handmade stuff recently, really love it. My training in ex-corporate jobs has been taken over by left brain, so very thrilled that I took up a semi hobby to paint for fun too. Please keep being crafty and post them. I will follow your hub now. Cheers!

Writing is my passion, but I've found that as long as one stays creative, there's no telling where your creativity will take you. I didn't do anything creative for 10 years because it was all about the job. I am retired, now. I like to spin and weave when I have time, but I consider myself a beginner. There are not enough hours in the day for me, and I chase anything that interests me.

I am loving all of your Valentine's Day craft ideas, Arlene! I don't usually break out the craft supplies much after Christmas, but I may just do that this year. You are inspiring me. Thanks.

Hi, Deborah! Congratulations for Hub of the Day! And thank you for your comments. I think I'm gearing up for Christmas. Creating valentines is so much fun to do, and other than a a couple of sheets of art paper (45-55 cents), I already had my supplies at my home.

Thank you for the vote up, alocsin. I am hooked on making my own cards and will now find any excuse to get out my art supplies. Looking forward to making Christmas cards and crafts. The holiday season seems to sneak up on us, anyway.

Thanks, Arlene! I get very crafty at Christmas time, too. In fact, I finally got my craft table cleaned off a week or so ago and everything put back to order. Now I can mess it up all over again! We have a spare bedroom that doubles as a craft room, and I tend to shut the door after the holidays and forget all about the huge mess for weeks on end. It's shameful, really.

You go, Girl! I remember taking my last card class and watching this woman happily smear her face with glitter. Uh--okay! Sometimes I do wonder about crafty women who are forever making something, but I do enjoy making things and being around all these creative people. Thrilling! Now, I have to clean up after my bad self! Ewwwww!

How about a one hundred dollar bill in a plain brown envelope?

Arlene V. Poma profile image

For what? $100 payment to LOVE and ADORE you? Or is it to PUT UP with you? You certainly show how much of a ROMANTIC you are. How about folding it into a heart origami style? Of course not! That's too much effort on your part. So where's your creativity hiding these days? It sure ain't on Valentine's Day, Fella! I'd DIVORCE you in a heartbeat!!! Thump, thump!

Don't despair Arlene. It was a joke, a jest. Doesn't the loving heart hold the ability to laugh and enjoy life.

And truthfully, I don't think much of Valentine's Day. To me and my wife of thirty-four years, everyday is better than Valentine's Day.

You wrote a lovely blog. You should be proud of yourself. Keep writing!

So much for your "joke" and putting your foot in your mouth on Valentine's Day, Historicus. Besides, $100 doesn't even keep up with inflation.

If somebody gave me a $100 bill in a plain brown envelope for Valentine's, it'd better be sticking out from a dozen super-fragrant roses in a pretty vase from a florist, not in a cellophane cone from the cooler at the supermarket (or worse, that bucket next to the cash register at the 7-11)!

Arlene, hope your Valentine's Day was wonderful! ;D

JamaGenee: I did have a wonderful Valentine's Day! Thank you! I hope yours was memorable, too.

I was reading that smart ass comment last night and could not help but respond to the jerk. "$100 in a plain brown envelope" made me instantly think of something you would give a hooker for her services or hear some insensitive husband who would say, "Go get yourself something pretty, Honey because I'm not making an effort for you." His comment, although he swears it was only a "joke," cheapened the whole effort of someone trying to make a valentine for a sweetheart. I had spent the day watching people scramble for the candy and chocolates while spending the day with hubby. Although this Hubber was new to HubPages, there wasn't enough room in the COMMENTS section so that I could "rip him a new one." I mean, if you can't say something nice, stay away from making a smart ass comment! But I looked up all his comments, and that's him M.O. Written about six Hubs, and goes around making one-sentence comments. Yes, if someone gave me money on Valentine's Day, I would be insulted. It would be like getting a vacuum cleaner on my birthday or Christmas for "services."
