Do you keep the contents of your dresser drawers in order? Does that include the drawer holding your underwear?

Nobody sees the contents of your dresser drawers except you. Out of all the drawers in a dresser, the most ignored and disorganized drawer is the drawer which is designated to hold your underwear. Since underwear is considered “intimate” and very personal apparel for anyone, no one pays attention to take inventory. Most likely, your underwear inventory is a mystery for you. It is probably a blend of clothing that you use each day, but don’t have any idea of what you have.

Divide the Dresser Drawers to Sort Your Clothing

Dresser drawers allow for items to collect, but if you divide the space, you will work at being more organized. When you divide a drawer into sections, then you can designate each space for chosen items.

Starting the Project

How good are you at measuring and working with a hammer and nails? If you have some experience making simple wood projects, making dividers would take only an hour or two.

If you have little or no experience, the clerk at the local hardware store suggested recruiting a family member or friend to do the project if they are experienced with this kind of work. It would be easier to supply what was needed and in exchange for the work, you could always pay the person, barter for goods or promise them a meal.

Here’s what you will need to put dividers in a dresser drawer:

Dresser drawer, any size

Hammer

Measuring tape

Table or hand saw

Wire nails

Wood glue

3/8” by 36” square spruce sticks

Small sheet of very thin wood (for dividers)

Steps to Construct Dresser Drawers Dividers

1) Measure the height of the drawer and allow a 1/8” gap from the divider to the top of the drawer’s side.

2) Using this measurement, cut the amount of spruce sticks needed. 4 spruce sticks are needed for each divider.

3) To prevent splitting during installation, nail one wire nail halfway through the top and bottom of the spruce stack. Do not nail all the way through because the placement of these nails will prevent the sticks from splitting during installation.

4) Measure the width of the drawer and cut the pieces needed for divider. You can also cut two additional pieces to use as spacers to guide placement.

Now You Are Ready (See Photographs)

1) Using the tape measure or spacers, decide where you want the dividers. Taking two spruce sticks, glue them to opposite sides of the drawer and leave a space for the wood divider placement. Nail the sticks to the drawer sides and wipe away any excess glue. Repeat process on the opposite side.

2) If you have other dividers for placement, choose where you want the dividers and repeat step #1 for each divider.

3) Drop measured divider between the spruce sticks you had installed in the drawer.

4) When the glue has turn white and has dried, you are ready to arrange and organize your clothing in these drawers.

Cindy, if you're good at delegating, find a friend or family member who will do this for you. I know I am limited when it comes to projects like these, so I "assigned" this to hubby.

Thank you, carol! I only have a few pieces of old wood furniture and hesitated to alter my only dresser. But if I didn't alter the drawer, I would not be using the space to its full potential. The dividers did not harm the looks of the dresser, but if you have something that is an antiques, you need to decide between looks and practicality. I always believed in using what you have. I'm not in the market for owning museum pieces.

After being slobs all these years, me and hubby don't expect to change overnight. The dividers are a positive step for us, but going as far as folding underwear and placing them in the drawers is too much to ask of us right now. With the dividers, we were forced to sort what we had. We now know what we have. And instead of having to go through a drawer of mixed stuff and wasting time, we at least know where everything is located. I'm no housewife. I have to be bored to death to even want to fold underwear. Not happening at this time!

Oddly enough, Jamie, this is probably one of my most popular Hubs. It is barely 500 words, so I have to laugh whenever I check into my account. Are any of my readers making dividers for their dresser drawers or are they being like people who love to view cooking shows without needing to cook? I don't regret having hubby help me with my antique drawer shown. It has been organized ever since, and for a retiree, I'm very fashionable in the underwear department. His drawer, despite the dividers, is still a total mess. (Sigh).
