A Last Minute Romantic Stay at a Historic Bed and Breakfast Inn

Sometimes, you don’t have to go halfway around the country or around the world for a romantic, dream vacation. There will be times when one of your best vacations will be at a much slower pace. Ever think about checking into a bed and breakfast (B&B)?

Located in historic Sutter Creek, California, the Grey Gables Inn is a romantic B&B conveniently located along Historic Highway 49. Owned and operated by innkeepers Roger and Sue Garlick, this B&B welcomes their guests to an unforgettable B&B experience. The couple still speaks with the charming English accents, and they have carefully created surroundings that can take you there—even if it is for just the weekend.

While toiling in Silicon Valley, the Garlicks would frequently visit Sutter Creek with friends as an escape from work. When the huge, historic house on the corner of Hanford Street went up for sale, Roger and Sue bought it, renovated it and opened it up as the Grey Gables Inn.

The elegant Grey Gables means elegance to its guests and a chance to unwind from the outside world. The five private rooms at the inn are equipped with massive antique furniture and knick knacks from another period of time. The feeling of romance is always in the air, and the rooms are named after poets. The largest room at the inn, the Bronte room, occupies a single floor and includes a full bathroom, a fireplace and plenty of room. Grey Gables is patterned after an English style Inn, and the schedule at the B&B automatically sends guests into another time period of peace and quiet. Although there is wireless Internet available at the inn, there are no phones, radios or televisions in the rooms. Even with the hustle and bustle of Historic Highway 49, the B&B is a quiet escape from a very busy outside world.

Sue Garlick, the perfect innkeeper, serves afternoon tea, local wine and hors d’oeuvres. In the mornings, she serves a gourmet breakfast of quiche and other delights. The living room and the dining rooms are tastefully decorated by Sue, using antique furniture and delicate English collectibles. Guests will notice that she has an eye for detail. Even the wine and water glasses are decorated with lace.

A weekend’s stay at a B&B like the Grey Gables is a treat for anyone needing a brief escape from suburban or city life. It can also be an escape from work and the stress of the work week. Sometimes, a short vacation at a bed and breakfast is just what you need as a way to return to everyday life.

A Californian B&B whose owners have an English accent? YAY! Maybe if I visit this place I can pretend I'm in the UK... minus the long flight and killer exchange rate. Thanks for sharing this place with us! I had not heard of it before.

I'm with Simone! An English countryside vacation right in California. Love the idea, your descriptions and photographs. Best, Steph

That's exactly how I felt, Simone. I did pretend I was in England while staying at the Grey Gables Inn. Who could resist? The Garlicks were simply the best! They make you feel so welcome, and at the same time, save you the plane ticket and lodging. Ooooooh! Time for another visit!

Thank you, steph. Everyone should visit a B&B. Nothing like it for R&R. Hope to visit the Grey Gables Inn again. The Garlicks keep the inn open all year (except for one month of their chosen vacation) and experience quite a bit of repeat customers. Must be the atmosphere and Sue's wonderful cooking. The breakfast quiche is always a hit with the suburbanites and city slickers!

Sounds lovely. I want to stay in the Bronte room! You always have such nice photos to go with your hubs. Did you get that new camera you wanted?

Excellent choice, Deborah! We stayed in the Bronte room, and it's the best room at the inn. Thank you for the compliment! I did get the little Nikon that I wanted for Christmas, but I still need to learn its editing process. These photographs were taken by my old, reliable (and now obsolete) Kodak with 2.0 pixels.

Thank you for the compliment, Eddy! There are so many "pieces of Heaven" to be found on Earth, and I'm still discovering them.

You may have solved my problem about what to do for our anniversary next month.- Lovely hub. When we lived in Sacto we drove through Sutter Creek on our way to Kirkwood. Not too far from the bay area. I will research the possibility.

Happy Anniversary, tirelesstraveler. Thank you for reminding me! I have an anniversary next month, too. The anniversary of our first date. When at the B&B it was full house that weekend. One woman was celebrating her birthday alone. That was her special request. She asked to be away from her husband and kids for three days. If you are familiar with the area, you know how quiet, charming and peaceful it can be. Thank you for your comments.
